Norway’s world champion Ole Einar Björndalen returns to the Biathlon World Cup in Kontiolahti after his missed Olympic appearance this week. This was announced by the Norwegian Association.
Accordingly, the eight-time Olympic champion replaced on Thursday in the sprint the short-term sick Emil Hegle Svendsen. Whether Björndalen will also be used in other races at the weekend in Finland, depends mainly on a possible recovery from Svendsen, said sporting director Per Arne Botnan.
The 44-year-old Björndalen had missed Norway’s internal Olympic standard for Pyeongchang during the season and thus missed his seventh Winter Games in series. Also for the Olympic dress rehearsal in Antholz, the 20-time world champion in January had not been nominated.
It is still unclear whether Björndalen will end his career after the season at the end of the month.
